FOR USE WITH A COLLET CHUCK ONLY - Not designed to be used with the PLS or MVS #2MT Mandrel Holder
This mandrel requires a very accurate bore in the blank and a resonalby smooth surface finish on the bore. It is STRONGLY recommended that you drill the blank 1/64" undersize, and then use a chucking reamer to open up the bore. A boring bar used on a metal lathe is also a very good alternative. Your bore should to be .6255" - .627" to work properly with the pin locking function, or you will need to shim up the locking pin with tape, mylar, or shim stock. An expanding mandrel is a better choice if you are not cabable of making the more accurate bore.
5/8" (.625") Stub Length PLS mandrels are designed to allow turning and finishing your barrels without the use of a tail stock. The stub mandrels are a shortened version of the PLS mandrel. This helps in situations where the user has a very short bed lathe, or when the user wishes to turn the end of the call and not use the tail stock (for example when shaping the mouth piece of the barrel).
OAL ≈4" and has a 3/4" wide pin slot and one recessed cut. 5/8" shank for use with a collet chuck only (and 5/8" collet).
Stubby mandrels require a bit less force and a touch more finesse as does the PLS. These mandrels are not designed for hogging off material like the MVS, so take your time and get used to the limits of this style of mandrel before you "lay in to it" very hard. If you are looking for a "Beginner's Mandrel" - this mandrel is NOT it. See expanding mandrels.
